On my way out to Mendenhall Glacier, I ran into Jill Homer. She’s one of those radical bikers that just won’t let winter get in the way of a good spin on a beautiful day. In fact, Jill publishes a blog on her winter biking o-b-s-e-s-s-i-o-n: Up in Alaska. We’ll be talking to Jill more in the next few weeks. But it was great to visit with her today near the Mendenhall Glacier. Come to Juneau.
As a registered voter in Alaska, I take an active interest in political developments. Alaska Airlines and the Community of Juneau provide a discounted air fare to visit Juneau and contact your state legislators in person–or to take care of state-related business. To get the discount, you need to have an account at Alaskaair.com. That’s simple to set up if you do not have one. Once you get the account, go to “My Account” and look under “My discount codes” on the right-hand column. In that section, you should find the “Constituent Fare” discount. Copy and paste the number when you’re making your plans for travel to Juneau. I save a couple of hundred dollars on my ticket. Check out the picture with me and John Binkley. John was in Juneau to support “Susan Butcher Day”. The legislature is considering setting aside a day in March to honor Susan, who passed away from Cancer. Susan was best-remembered for winning the Iditarod four times. But she was so much more than that, as her husband shared with the Senate State Affairs Committee. The committee Chair, Sen. Lesil McGuire, spoke for many in the audience when she mentioned that Susan was a real Alaska hero.
Just got back from a hike to Mendenhall Glacier. The glacier is an easy drive from downtown Juneau. It’s a beautiful day for a hike, with temperatures hovering between 10 and 15 degrees (above!). That, of course, is f-r-i-g-i-d for Juneau. Don’t miss the chance to come to Juneau during the winter. First, it’s great for skiing at Eaglecrest, hiking at Mendenhall Glacier or schmoozing your favorite legislator.

Greetings from beautiful downtown Juneau. I flew in this morning from Anchorage on Alaska Airlines. I used my “Constituent Fare” which provides for a discount of up to 40 percent. It worked for me. If you have a “MyAlaskaAir” account, Alaska Air should have dropped in a “Discount Code” which you can see by clicking on “My Discount Codes” when you sign into your online account. I’m here to talk with my state legislators about important issues. Now is a great time to visit with your Alaska state legislators, according to Lorene Palmer, who runs Juneau’s Convention and Visitors Bureau. Lorene and I had lunch at the Hangar, which sits on a dock overlooking the water. I ordered the Halibut Taco. DEEE-LICIOUS! It’s a glorious day in Juneau. If you want to travel to Juneau to visit your Alaska state legislator, three hotels are offering deals. I’m staying at the Driftwood Lodge, which offers rooms for $39 to Constituents. It’s right downtown and the Sandpiper Restaurant is right next door. Yum! The Juneau Hotel also offers a special rate for Constituents: just $69 per night. Do you like to stay out by the airport? Stay at the Frontier Suites. The rate is $79. I always rent from Avis. Nice new Impaler. HA!
