People get around Alaska in the winter in many different ways. Some drive. Others mush their dog teams through the woods. Some wing-nuts fly. Others ride their bikes. I like to ski. And when I want some good traction, I go see Paul Denkewalter over at Alaska Mountaineering and Hiking. In this picture, he’s standing next to his Wall of Wax. I grabbed some blue and purple wax to gear up for a ski tomorrow. But tomorrow’s big ski is the Alaska Ski for Women. So, I don’t qualify–but I encourage those skiers who are going out to raise some money for AWAIC (Abused Women’s Aid in Crisis). The big ski I’m training for is the Tour of Anchorage. It’s next month, on Mar. 2, the day after the start of the Iditarod Sled Dog Race. It’s a big weekend for Anchorage-in-the-Snows. Don’t miss it. Oh, if you’re a cross-country skier, be sure and buy a pin at Alaska Mountaineering and Hiking. That’s how the Nordic Ski Club pays for their fancy groomers. Chip in–buy a pin! So check with Paul and the crew at Alaska Mountaineering and Hiking for all your ski needs. And let him know if you want to climb McKinley. Many climbers get their gear from Paul. Ask him about his brother, Eric. He flies climbers up to McKinley from Talkeetna with his business, Talkeetna Aero Services. See you on the trails!
