Early spring is the time to see the gray whales in Resurrection Bay. Renown Tours‘ cruises start on Mar. 29. Sail from 12n-4p. Lunch is included. Binoculars provided on all the cruises.

Sail along as the captain heads out to the opening of Resurrection Bay to watch Gray Whales as they begin their annual migration north from Baja California to their summer feeding waters in the Bering Sea. Gray Whales travel by “line of sight”, which means that they travel close to the coastline on this amazing journey. While cruising this pristine setting, you will view alpine glaciers, Steller sea lions, Dall’s porpoise, harbor porpoise, harbor seals, bald eagles, puffins and many other types of marine birds. You might even be treated to sightings of Orca (killer whales) or Humpback Whales.

Price: $69 ($35 for kids 3-11) whale.jpgThere’s a good chance you’ll see some other wildlife on your cruise–maybe even some other whales, a puffin or two…who knows?

Plan now for Renown Tours’ six-hour National Park cruises. Also, when you’re in Seward, you MUST go to the Alaska SeaLife Center. Must see! Must see!

The Whale’s Tail in the Hotel Captain Cook is my new downtown club! The lovely staff make a mean espresso–and there are all sorts of munchies within arm’s reach: cookies, bagels, brownies–full metal jacket.

Stop in after work for a featured glass of wine. There are several out on the bar right now. I lean towards the Pinot Noir. But you can make your own choice.

The layout is very comfy. In addition to the roomy booths around the perimeter, you can sink into one of the alcoves and watch tv, or pick one of the plush couches. Check out the art on display–or pick up a current newspaper. Oh–I almost forgot to mention FREE WIRELESS. My favorite word. “Free”, that is. “Wireless” is a close second!

Last time I stopped in was just after a massage at the Health Club downstairs. When you stay at the hotel, you receive free access to the club, including the pool, the weight room, the sauna, the steam room and so forth.

There’s a weekend special at the Hotel Captain Cook: $125 per night. It’s the nicest place in town. Here’s a picture of a corner of the Whale’s Tail. Nice.Whale’s Tail

Chef Mark Tafoya from the Remarkable Palate came up to cook with Kirsten Dixon of Winterlake Lodge

We love Winterlake. It’s out at Milepost 198 on the Iditarod Trail. In fact, the dogs run right through Carl and Kirsten’s front yard! Last month, we flew out to the lodge with Rust’s Flying Service from Lake Hood.

Carl met the plane, a deHavilland Beaver, with a cup of coffee for our pilot and two snowmachines with trailers for us and our gear. In fact, we had so much junk that Carl had to come back for another load.

Kirsten loves to do culinary weekends at the lodge. Folks come from all over the world to “unplug” at the lodge. There’s a wellness room with daily Yoga classes so you can get all limbered up for the day’s activities. You can mush a dog team, go on a snowmachine tour, go cross-country skiing or snow-shoeing. Or you can sit by the fire and read a book.

But you won’t go hungry! Kirsten and her staff do a wonderful job of making great meals so you have enough energy to do what must be done–even if it’s just a game of ping-pong in the bar!

Check out Chef Mark’s video. It’ll make you want to go to Winterlake Lodge. You won’t be disappointed!

Okay. I’m not a big skin-care fan. But my wife and the kids really appreciate the lotions and potions that Janet Shafsky manufactures.

Called “Impressions by Janet”, Shafsky makes shampoos, moisturizing cream, lipstick, facial sponges, night creme and a host of other goodies.

The girls love it.

She’s having a little sale. Visit her website: www.impressionsbyjanet.com

In the Skin Care section, she’s offering $5 off Ididacreme. This is the heavy-duty wilderness-grade moisturizer that musher DeeDee Jonrowe uses when she runs the 1,049 mile Iditarod Sled Dog Race between Anchorage and Nome.

Then there’s $5 off “Polar Lip Therapy”, plus you can receive a Free Jonrowe Blue Liquid Liner with any $25 Cosmetics purchase.Janet’s website is pretty cool–and you can order all the stuff online.

Still, I prefer to give it away. I stopped by Janet’s place earlier today to pick up a couple of sample packs for our readers. That’s YOU!

These sample packs include all sorts of goodies, including:

a. Daily Exfoliant

b. Hydrating Mist

c. Shampoo

d. Orange cleanser

e. Facial toner

f. Moisturizer

g. Night creme…and more!

Plus, the sample packs fit into a clear, plastic bag that is TSA-compliant.

ACK.

It’s the perfect travel package for a person on the go!
