All A-b-o-a-r-d the Alaska Railroad!

In Adventure, Alaska Travelgram by scott

This is the time of year when the Alaska Railroad rolls out some of its special train rides. We love the train! Here is a selection of several trains this month and next month. Check ’em out:

a. Alaska Blues Train. This is next weekend–so act fast. Rock the rails between Anchorage and Seward Sept. 20-21. “The Rebel Blues” is the featured band. Start the trip as you roll down Turnagain Arm–it’s always beautiful.

Your ticket includes appetizers, drinks, a BBQ spread and overnight accommodations in Seward.

The fun continues in Seward with more blues, plus burgers on the grill. Free shuttles to the hotels in Seward until 12 Midnight. On Sunday, ride the train back to Anchorage.

You have to be 21 to ride the Blues Train. Tickets are $249 per person, double occupancy.

b. Fall Foliage Train between Anchorage and Spencer Glacier. This train runs on Sept. 27, from 4-9pm. It’s really a fancy dinner cruise-on the rails! Check out the fall colors along Turnagain Arm and into the mountains as you munch on gourmet eats and sip fine wine!

Here’s a rundown of the menu:

Appetizers: Domestic and Imported Cheeses, Sliced Sausages, Fresh Vegetables with Spicy Ranch Dip, Roasted Oysters with Southwest Cilantro Pesto, Assorted Canapes. Wine: (A little “Bubbly” for that festive feeling!) Domaine St Michelle Brut Sparkling

Fish course: Pumpkin seed crusted Alaskan halibut cheeks, Saffron cream And tomato-basil relish. Paired with: Roasted Butternut Squash Bisque. Wine: Columbia Crest Grand Estates Chardonnay

Main course: Oven roasted Pork tenderloin medallions with pear-black currant chutney, Braised red cabbage and cider reduction. Wine: Red Diamond Merlot Walla Walla

Dessert: Cinnamon Apple Croissant Pudding with Calvados Carmel sauce. Wine: Ch. St. Michelle Indian Wells Riesling

Cost for the train is $159 per person.

c. Great Alaska Beer Train. Folks, when I talked with Susie over at the Alaska Railroad, she told me this “Oktoberfest” train is almost sold out. So you have to act FAST to be included. It operates Sat., Oct. 4, between 4-8:30p. I love how they position the train: “Take a scenic journey along Turnagain Arm with the world’s best designated driver – the Alaska Railroad.”

This rolling party includes hors d’oeuvres to help soak up the six half-pints of Microbrews from the Glacier Brewhouse. Naturally, you have to be 21 to ride this train! Cost is $149 per person.

We love to ride on the Alaska Railroad. You will, too. Take advantage of this fall’s great “special trains”. Book online or call (907)265-2494.
