My friend Steve Hites lives in Skagway, where he first joined the White Pass Railway 36 years ago. Today, he runs the Skagway Streetcar Company–which gives tours of the city in vintage 1927 airporters. They do a great job! Here, he shares a little bit about workin’ on the railroad!

Alaska Airlines mileage deals+Kids Fly Free

Take advantage of Alaska Airlines‘ mileage perks. It’s your duty as a frequent flyer to make the most of your mileage plan! Here are some tips:
a. Sign up. There are some built-in bonuses, including a 5,000-mile bonus. If you live in Oregon or one of several Washington counties, there is a special 20,000-mile bonus if you make a qualifying flight after signing up. That’s enough for a free ticket.
b. Get the credit card. Here at the McMurren house, we have two of the credit cards, from Bank of America. The big bonus is the $99 companion pass. That alone is worth the $75 annual fee. But you also get one mile for every dollar you spend. PLUS, you get a mileage bonus of 20,000 miles when you’re approved for your credit card–and a 5,000-mile bump when you charge your first $750.
c. Coordinate your purchases and your travel choices. Remember, in addition to Alaska Airlines, you can earn miles by shopping at Carrs/Safeway, by calling on GCI, or by flying on partner airlines including Delta, Era Alaska and American Airlines.

New airline service in Alaska

We’ve been doing some deep research on NEW FLIGHTS to Alaska with our friends at USTravel. This is big news fortravelers, since it portends lower fares as more carriers work to fill up their flights. Below, we’ll review new and increased service by United Airlines, Sun Country Airlines, Continental Airlines, American Airlines, Air Canada, Delta Air Lines, Frontier Airlines and USAirways.
