My friend Sally Oberstein down in Homer loves to travel. She just got back from Kenya and Tanzania–and now she’s planning a trip to Costa Rica. Above–a nice snapshot of the Arenal Volcano.

$2192 per person, double. Includes accommodations, meals, ground and sea transportation, sailing, rafting, snorkeling, land tours, boat trips, zip-lining, hikes, wildlife viewing, hot springs, village visit, and more! Air fare is not included.
  • Day 1: – Arrive San Jose. Overnight.
  • Day 2: Early departure for  three-day/two-night tour of Tortuguero. Once you reach the small port of Matina/Caño Blanco, the tour continues by boat, first on the river and then through the canals that run parallel to the coast until Tortuguero National Park.
  • Day 3: – Tortuguero – National Park. The park is formed by a navigable network of lakes and canals with a large variety of wildlife, including monkeys, crocodiles, iguanas, sloths, turtles and more than 300 species of birds.
  • Day 4: – Tortuguero. Into the cloud forest.
  • Day 5 – Travel through a tropical jungle by raft, in a deep canyon with waterfalls, exotic animals, tropical birds and plenty of whitewater, watching for monkeys, sloths and tropical birds such as oropéndolas and toucans.
  • Day 6 – Baldi Hot Springs. Your day will begin with the combo canopy tour, where you will see more than 500 acres of forest from the top of the trees. Then, zip line! Dip into the thermal mineral pools at Baldi Resort, surrounded by tropical gardens.
  • Day 7 – Tractor tour! Breathtaking views of the Gulf of Nicoya and Santa Elena.  â€¨After dark, you’ll walk the cloud forest trails surrounded by thick jungle where you can observe sleeping birds, grasshoppers, crickets, lizards, frogs, sloths, porcupines, white/nose coatis, olingos, kinkajous and more.
  • Day 8 –  Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. More than 500 species of orchids cling to the limbs of enormous trees, while vines, ferns, mosses and lichens fill every other available space. Monteverde Cloud Forest houses more than 130 species of mammals, 400 species of birds, including the beautiful quetzal, 30 species of hummingbirds, 5000 species of moths and 3000 species of plants
  • Day 9 –  Manuel Antonio. The park includes 12 little isles just off the coast.Watch for dolphins and, at times, migrating whales.
  • Day 10 – Manuel Antonio. ‘Catamaran Island Adventure’ begins at Quepos Harbor. Watch for dolphins, migrating humpback whales, sea turtles and manta rays. As you make your way down the coastline of the park, the mysterious islands, jagged cliffs and unique rock formations will look almost close enough to reach out and touch. These are the nesting grounds and home for numerous species of marine birds, including pelicans, boobies and ibises.
  • Day 11. – Manuel Antonio. Free day.
  • Day 12 – Depart for San Jose and flight back to U.S.
