Check out the view from across Gastineau Channel towards Juneau. I snapped this from the Beachside Villa B-n-B, a swanky inn right on the water!

Alaskans travel for many reasons: sun, fun and lawmaking. Uh, that’s right: the legislature now is in session. Each year, the folks in Juneau team up with Alaska Airlines to offer a discounted “constituent fare”.

Between now and mid-April, legislators and state officials will craft laws, develop policies and make plans that affect each of us—from Ketchikan to Barrow.

It’s a grown-up “Civics Lesson” to visit your legislators in session and lobby for your issues, including:kevin

Education funding
-transportation infrastructure (ferries, roads, bridges)
-High cost of energy in rural Alaska
-oil and gas tax issues
-Medicaid expansion in Alaska
-Natural resource development

These are just examples. Ask any Alaskan about legislative priorities and they are likely to come up with their own customized list. Right, I visited with my state senator, Kevin Meyer. He’s co-chair of the Senate Finance Committee.

And THAT is why Alaskans should take advantage of the special consitituent fare and visit Juneau.

Every Alaska resident is eligible to receive a Constituent Fare discount code for travel TO Juneau (it’s not available to Juneau residents who want to leave!). The code is valid for a 30 percent discount off of a 3- or 7-day advance purchase.

If you’re signed up to receive Alaska Airlines emails, or if you’re a “CLUB 49” member, check your “MyAlaskaAir” account and look under “Discount Codes”. You’ll see the “2014 Constituent Fare” code. If you DON’T see it, contact Alaska Airlines at (800) 252-7522. The discounted air fare is available between Jan. 18 and Apr. 27, 2014.

Contact your legislators in advance of your visit to set up a chance to meet. TRUST ME–they look forward to seeing you!

While you’re in Juneau, enjoy the hospitality and activities!silverbow
