Craig and Susie Seibert have a little piece of Heaven west of Trapper Creek in the shadow of Denali: Gate Creek Cabins. Snowmachiners (uh…that’s “snowmobilers” for you bald-faced flatlanders) know all about Seiberts’ place in the Petersville Hills. But winter has arrived there a little early–and we’re here to tell you about it. Here’s Craig’s report:

Good News / Bad News:  8” Sunday (10/12) … and another 6” yesterday (10/13) … this all on a 6” wet base … so the snow is beginning to stack up!  There of course is still no base … so the safest place to ride is Still Petersville Rd .or any road surface with that same 20” of fluff.

Warning: The rivers, lakes, creeks, swamps are still not frozen … which also means rocks and stumps are not covered or protected by a solid base …  they hurt both you and your snowmachines.

The temps are looking better all the time, as they slowly drop below Freezing and stay there, tonight is clear and cold and should continue to drop (it’s 29 right now). Gorgeous Full Moon.

State D.O.T. as always is doing an AWESOME job again … and all the lots are plowed from MP 8 to Krotto Parking MP 13.5, and from what I’m hearing it will be busy this weekend.

Important: Gate Creek Cabins has no restaurant–you bring your own food. Kenny Creek Lodge opens this weekend with new Owners and Tony the GM says they will offer Pizza until 10PM …  907-733-1310.  The Forks will also be hoping this weekend 733-1851.

Keep the rubber side down and be safe this weekend  the road will be fast, watch out for rocks and old mining equipment….Craig

Thanks, Craig! See you on the trails! Here’s a nice shot of their view. Whoo-boy!

Like many other readers, I took advantage of last month’s pre-PFD sale to snag a $149 ticket to Seattle from Anchorage on Alaska Airlines. My itinerary included a few flights on sister airline Horizon. We flew from Santa Rosa to Seattle on a sleek Bombardier Q400:

Checking in for the 6:30pm flight (#104) was a snap. Everything in Anchorage was going nicely.  The flight, however, was delayed two hours due to a mechanical glitch.

I ran into a friend of mine, Mike D. from Seattle, at the gate. He and I retired to the Board Room to chat about kids, careers and all things internet.

The plane, a 737-800, was in good shape and the pilot put the pedal to the metal, getting us to Seattle in less than three hours. Nonetheless, with a 12:45am arrival, I missed my shuttle and had to take a $38 cab ride to my hotel, the Quality Inn, near the Space Needle. Thankfully, there was no traffic!  (more…)

We were waiting when the New York carrier would make an entrance here in Alaska. Our friends at Era Aviation snapped this shot out at Anchorage International Airport.

Um, okay. This one’s a charter flight. The “McCain-Palin” logo on the side is a dead giveaway. First Fairbanks, now Anchorage. And isn’t that E-190 a sleek-looking aircraft? See that bump on the top of the plane about 2/3 down the fuselage? I think it’s part of the hardware for the seatback entertainment system. Learn more online.

Wow. Those of us in Alaska still are in “shock-and-awe” mode over Sen. John McCain’s choice of our very own Governor, Sarah Palin, as his pick for his vice-presidential running mate. Here at the Alaska Travelgram, we know Gov. Palin as a fine woman who not only talks the talk…she walks the walk. In fact, we had no problem telling her to “Take a Hike!” last February when the folks at Alaska HDTV filmed her. Check it out:

Go, Sarah, Go! (more…)
