I’m a big fan of Avis here in Alaska. I’ve rented from them in Kodiak, Kenai, Fairbanks, Juneau, Sitka–all over. Except Petersburg. Still haven’t gotten down there.

But this spring, I went ahead and bought one of their cars. A nice, red, 2007 Toyota Camry (above). This fall, they’ve got a good portion of their fleet for sale, including their H-O-T anniversary cars–Camaros, Bugs and Minis. Check ‘em out.

In Anchorage:
2010 VW Beetle: Wow factor, including flower vase on the dash. Low miles. $19, 475.
2010 Mini Cooper: Super-low miles. FUN! $22,685
2010 Camaro: Only 5K miles: $28, 675. Wow!

Special car sales in Fairbanks, Kodiak, Juneau, Sitka..and here in Anchorage.

Here are some of my favorites:

2009 Toyota Corolla (blue): 37,600 mi. $13,690
2009 Toyota Camry (white): 37,000 mi. $15,790
2008 Toyota RAV4 (red): 37,000 mi. $19,390
2008 Toyota Sienna 4WD minivan (white): 34,000 mi. $20,490

Okay. It’s a small thing, but I’m a bigger man for it. Mm-hmm. Era Alaska’s cookies. They are back on the Dash-8 flights. I flew to Kenai the other day. These tasty treats are individually wrapped for your comfort and protection! ONE per traveler, puh-leeze. I asked for three of course (for the children). HA!

Once in Kenai, I got one of Avis’s VW Bugs to drive around. Such a MANLY car–wouldn’t you agree. There’s even a little vase for some flowers attached to the dash. I am not making this up. Manly, I tell you!! HA!

So, fly on Era’s Dash-8 flights all around Southcentral Alaska and gorge yourself on those cookies. I did.

After renting Camrys from Avis all over Alaska, I finally broke down and bought one. Actually, it’s our second Camry. We’re officially a two-Camry family. At left–picking up a Camry at  Juneau airport(note Heritage Coffee on the roof!).
Really, though. Avis has littered the state with these…uh…rather boring cars. HA. I’ve rented them in Kodiak, Kenai, Juneau, Fairbanks, Sitka…even here in Anchorage.
I did a little research before buying my 2007 4cyl. “LE” model. I went and asked the shop people which cars they like the best. They said “anything that says Toyota or Honda is good”. These are folks who spend all day and all night fiddling with cars that are rented out by the day, week, month, etc.
Avis Trivia: The Avis shop here in Alaska is 55 years old (same as me). I think it’s high time for a mid-life crisis. I have it on good authority that there will be some birthday fireworks later on this summer. We’ll be watching.
I’ve only done one mod since I picked up my new steed. Since mine is a red car, I thought I’d spice it up with a little Alaska Love. Picked up this kewl sticker over at Dos Manos Gallery–across from Title Wave Books on Northern Lights Blvd. So–whether I’m renting or buying from Avis in Alaska…love my Camry!

ToyotaYa. I’ve been renting Camrys from Avis here in Alaska for years.

Juneau. Fairbanks. Kodiak. Kenai. Even here in Anchorage.

Then I bought one. Honestly, I could do one of those “Love my Camry” commercials.  CLICK HERE to see rental specials here in Alaska.

At the end of the summer, Avis sells off much of its rental fleet around the state. Here are some of the deals I saw at their website:

Anchorage

2007 Toyota Camry: $16,590

2006 Toyota Corolla 12,690

2007 Toyota Highlander 19.590

2007 Toyota RAV4 18,490

2009 Nissan Murano AWD 28,490

Check with the folks at Avis here in Anchorage for details: (907)249-8243. Check the latest deals online.

Now is your chance to drive part of the Alcan Highway! Avis has a herd of stranded rental cars down in Skagway, just waiting for folks to drive them up the Alcan to Anchorage or Fairbanks.

Avis

Here’s how it works. First–show up in Skagway on Aug. 20 or later. Then, pick up your car at Avis’s office. Remember–this deal is for one-way rentals ONLY to Anchorage or Fairbanks. The rate does not apply if you decide to return the car back in Skagway!

The cost is $50/day, plus 15 percent Skagway tax. Normally, Avis charges a $300 drop charge–but they’re waiving it just to get the cars back “home” to Anchorage or Fairbanks.

This $50/day special is valid through Sept. 30 or until the cars are all gone. So email Avis’s special in-box for the promotion:  reservations@avisalaska.com .

How far is it? Just 830 miles, one-way. Whoo-boy. As I said: ROAD TRIP!
