If you haven’t been to Wrangell, in southeast Alaska, you may want to cash in some Alaska Airlines miles and make the trip next week.
It’s the first annual “Bearfest”, starting July 21. Bears are everywhere, but there’s a GOB of blacks and browns at Anan Creek, about 30 miles from Wrangell. I love these photos by Ivan Simonek!  Take a jetboat from Wrangell with Alaska Waters. From there, hike an easy half-mile boardwalk trail along the shores of Anan Lagoon before coming to the Observatory.  Built by the Forest Service, managers of the Tongass, this viewing stand ensures a relatively safe and comfortable place from which visitors can view bears.   Black bears, especially during the summer’s salmon run (late June through August), are the main attraction; but brown bears, bald eagles and other seabirds and mammals may be seen there, as well.
Stay close to your guide. He or she is the one with the sawed-off shotgun. HA!
BEARFEST is a five-day celebration that will include everything from a bear symposium and bear-viewing related  workshops, to fun events for the entire family, to the annual Alaska Airlines Golf Tournament at Wrangell’s USGA rated golf course, Muskeg Meadows.
While you’re in Wrangell, go on a jetboat ride up the Stikine River or over to the LeConte Glacier. Check with Alaska Waters online, or visit them in the lobby of the Stikine Inn.

Sure, you can fly to Iceland to see a volcano–but we have so many right here in Alaska in Katmai National Park! One of my favorites is the mighty Novarupta, which blew its top back in 1912. It covered the valley under hundreds of feet of ash and pumice–creating the Valley of 10,000 Smokes.
These days, “Katmailand” is better known for its awesome sportfishing and big bear population.
The good news is the folks at Brooks Lodge, smack in the heart of Katmai National Park, are offering a great web special which includes an extra night at Brooks Lodge. GRAB it–and make sure you get reservations to go on the Valley tour. It’s an all-day proposition–longer if you want to camp in the valley.
Fish the Brooks River. Watch for bears. Explore one of MANY Alaska volcanoes! What a great holiday!
Here’s the special: Between June 1 and June 20, 2010 or between Aug. 10 and Aug. 25, 2010, buy a one-night air/lodging package at Brooks Lodge–and get  an additional night free! The cabins at Brooks can accommodate up to four people–so it makes sense to get some friends together for some fishing, some bear-watching and some hiking in the Valley!!
COST: $931 per person, dbl; $837 per person, trp; $791 per person, quad.
Your flight is included. So are your accommodations. Meals are extra–you can buy them at the lodge. It’s fun to sit around the big fireplace after a full day of adventures!! Also, your Valley Tour is an additional $96 per person. MUST DO MUST DO!!!!! This year, Katmailand celebrates its 61st year of continuous operations. Call ‘em up. Tell ‘em Scott sent you: (800)544-0551

For $219, you get two nights’ at Your $219 package includes two nights’ accommodations, a $50 gift card for tours and/or meals at the resort and 500 Alaska Airlines miles.

Or, choose a thrilling raft trip on the Nenana River. You can choose a “mild” ride or a “wild” ride.

Wow. Great trip to the Alaska Rainforest Sanctuary–where we snuck up on a  few bears gorging themselves on salmon. Then, zip-zip-zip we went on the Alaska Canopy Tour through the rainforest. Great stuff in Herring Cove, just outside of Ketchikan. Check it out:
