From there, hike an easy half-mile boardwalk trail along the shores of Anan Lagoon before coming to the Observatory. Built by the Forest Service, managers of the Tongass, this viewing stand ensures a relatively safe and comfortable place from which visitors can view bears. Sure, you can fly to Iceland to see a volcano–but we have so many right here in Alaska in Katmai National Park! One of my favorites is the mighty Novarupta, which blew its top back in 1912. It covered the valley under hundreds of feet of ash and pumice–creating the Valley of 10,000 Smokes.

I know, summer’s over. But the COLORS. The COLORS of DENALI! Check ‘em out with the great package from our friends at Denali Park Resorts.
For $219, you get two nights’ at Your $219 package includes two nights’ accommodations, a $50 gift card for tours and/or meals at the resort and 500 Alaska Airlines miles.
Optional activities include the MUST-DO ride into the park. I recommend the long ride into the park. It’s an 8-hour ride, but s-o-o-o worth it. This is your chance to see wildlife and scenery on the 85-mile road from the entrance back to Wonder Lake.

Afterwards, save room for the “Alaska Cabin Nite” dinner theater!
