Look, I know everybody’s doing it: it’s part of our Crackberry Nation. But I’m a little slow on the uptake when it comes to techno-gadgets.
My friends at GCI are trying to drag me into the 21st century. Now, my Blackberry actually takes videos, which I can post to my site.
It’s all part of my continuing education on the Blackberry. But what I’m really looking forward to is a session on the “Blackberry Campus”. This is a free class that GCI is offering to knuckle-heads like me who strive to remain smarter than their technology (awkward laugh). I know–forget it.
Really, tho’. Check these classes out: “BlackBerry 101″ Labs are designed to educate you about the features and functionality of BlackBerry smartphones. A GCI presenter and technical coach will lead the class through a slide presentation and interactive demonstration about BlackBerry basics, such as email and messaging, to more advanced tips and tricks.
The next classes are on Nov. 5, 14, 19 and 21. All the classes are held at GCI’s store at the corner of Northern Lights Blvd. and C St. here in Anchorage. See you there!

I keep missing these free seminars, but I’m determined to get to the next available “Blackberry Campus” lab sponsored by GCI.  In November, there are four sessions scheduled: Nov. 5, 14, 19 and 21. CLICK HERE TO REGISTER.

Okay-I know my phone is smarter than me. But hopefully, with this class, I’ll be able to make some progress. Join me at one of the classes–a Blackberry expert from GCI will lead the class through the basics (messaging, emails, etc.) plus more advanced tricks.

The classes are limited to 10 people–and they’re held at GCI’s store in Anchorage at Northern Lights and C St. There’s no additional charge for the classes–they’re free.

While I’m on the road, I depend on my Crackberry, as well as my “Xtreme Mobility” wireless card for my laptop. Heck–I used it today when visiting folks in their office. It’s fast and convenient!

The wireless card is $20/mo. when you have GCI Cable at home. Get it. It’s worth it.

Yup. GCI is the Official Technology sponsor of AlaskaTravelgram.com

We recently picked up a Nokia 5800 smartphone from GCI.Nokia 5800-1 I’m hooked on the Crackberry, of course (I need some more instruction!), but this new phone has a bunch of cool features, including a touch-screen, a robust music player, a 3-megapixel camera, etc.

And it’s just one more device that goes to support our office-on-the-move. When you’re traveling, you need to stay in touch. Here’s how we do it with GCI:

a. Cell phones that rock. We’re on the Nationwide Unlimited plan, with unlimited text. That way, I can stay away from the hotel phone. Nothing good ever comes from the hotel phone, aside from an occasional wake-up call.

b. Wireless card. This high-speed wireless solution is great when you cannot depend on the “free” wireless network at the coffee shop. Or, when you’re camped at the airport between flights–you can surf for free while others have to shell out $$$ for access. Let’s not talk about wicked hotels that charge for internet. GCI helps you escape their greedy clutches! The wireless card for your laptop is $20/mo. when you can Cable TV w/GCI (we do).

c. Home techno-bundle. We have our local/long-distance phone service with GCI, as well as their cable TV package with the HD channels. We also have the fastest internet package we can get, since we’re pushing up more videos.

GCI is a great partner for techno-geeks. On the road or on the sofa–we’re all connected. HAHA. I was waiting to see how I could squeeze in their snappy positioning statement. You get the idea.

I love my GCI Wireless Card. evdoIt’s the handy USB device that essentially brings hi-speed wireless to your laptop on the go. It works in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Soldotna, Seward, Wasilla, Juneau, Ketchikan and several places in between.

This is the perfect solution when you cannot count on the wireless connection at the coffee shop, or when the bad hotel people want to charge you $10-$20 to connect (b-a-a-d hotel!). This device works anywhere a cell phone works.

The Wireless Card is available for $20/mo. as long as you are a GCI cable customer.blackberry

My other favorite wireless device is my Blackberry smartphone. I finally figured out how to take a picture. Then there are voice commands, web access, email…this thing is way smarter than me. But I DID figure out how to change my ringtone–so I’m making progress.

Check with your local GCI store, or call the friendly folks at (800)800-4800 today.

Traveling around Alaska, many of the free internet hot spots are spotty, indeed. Slow speeds, non-secure hook-ups, broken connections, the works.

EVDOSo, I’m a big fan of GCI’s wireless card, which plugs into the side of my laptop. Dubbed “Xtreme Mobility”, the plan is available to existing GCI cable modem customers for $20 per month.

The card allows you to tap into super-fast EVDO signal from Whittier up to WIllow, over in Soldotna and up in Fairbanks. Oh, Seward, too. (more…)
