I love my GCI Wireless Card.
It’s the handy USB device that essentially brings hi-speed wireless to your laptop on the go. It works in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Soldotna, Seward, Wasilla, Juneau, Ketchikan and several places in between.
This is the perfect solution when you cannot count on the wireless connection at the coffee shop, or when the bad hotel people want to charge you $10-$20 to connect (b-a-a-d hotel!). This device works anywhere a cell phone works.
The Wireless Card is available for $20/mo. as long as you are a GCI cable customer.
My other favorite wireless device is my Blackberry smartphone. I finally figured out how to take a picture. Then there are voice commands, web access, email…this thing is way smarter than me. But I DID figure out how to change my ringtone–so I’m making progress.
Check with your local GCI store, or call the friendly folks at (800)800-4800 today.
Traveling around Alaska, many of the free internet hot spots are spotty, indeed. Slow speeds, non-secure hook-ups, broken connections, the works.
So, I’m a big fan of GCI‘s wireless card, which plugs into the side of my laptop. Dubbed “Xtreme Mobility”, the plan is available to existing GCI cable modem customers for $20 per month.
The card allows you to tap into super-fast EVDO signal from Whittier up to WIllow, over in Soldotna and up in Fairbanks. Oh, Seward, too. (more…)

Honestly, I don’t know what I did before I had these cool devices from GCI.
a. My EVDO wireless card from GCI. This is the handy USB device that plugs into the side of my MacBook to hook up in those fancy hotels that want $20/day for wireless. Evildoers!!!! It’s not just that, though. Even when I’m in my favorite coffeeshop, the Geek Squad next to me may be hogging bandwidth with their WoW machinations. I just plug in the card and BEHOLD–I can get a fast
connection, unencumbered by my neighbor’s gamefest. The cost is $20 per month if you have GCI cable modem access at home (I do). Worth it!
b. I’m hooked on my Blackberry. Many telecon uber-execs knew it would happen, too. Ah, the little trackball. Ah, my emails. Ah, my twittering thumbs. Jeez. Just let me set it down for a minute so I can put cream in my coffee. ACK–almost dropped it in the cup (j-e-s-t kidding).
These are just a couple of items in my GCI Wireless toolbox. Oh, I’ve got the wife and kids on the buddy plan for unlimited nationwide service, unlimited texting and unlimited local calls. It’s $100/mo. for her and $50/mo. for the kids. Come to think of it, right next to “Free” and “2-for-1″, “unlimited” ranks as one of my favorite words–especially when it comes to the telephonic Chat-Fest at Chez McMurren.
Don’t miss out. Check with GCI today. Chat and text your way into next week. Heck–it’s unlimited!
Honestly, I don’t know that my Crackberry from GCI makes me any smarter. But one thing’s for sure: THE PHONE is pretty smart.
I’m not exactly sure about all the features, but here are a few that I’ve “discovered” since I’m too distracted to read the manual:
a. texting. I KNOW–this is elementary, but the interface is clever. You can scroll through your address book (which I downloaded from my MacBook) and send a text or make a call. Pretty cool.
b. Pictures. Y-e-s-s-s. There’s a camera. I know that’s “normal” with phones today. But it’s still a novelty to me. GREAT NEWS: I took a picture and made it my wallpaper. Oh, the TECHNOLOGY. Greatest thing since Vulcanized Rubber!
c. Voice commands. I’m still programming this feature, but it’s pretty cool. “Say a command,” said the nice lady inside the phone.
d. Part iPod. I dumped a fair amount of my iTunes library onto the Crackberry (DAMN the kludge DRM!). The phone comes with standard-issue headphones, complete with little mic for hands-free operations. Pretty nice.
e. Web browser. I’ve finally figured out how to post to my twitter page and facebook using the crackberry. This is particularly useful while I’m waiting in line at the Post Office. Tick tock tick tock.
f. Other applications. Google Maps, Blackberry chat, alarm, Tetris. The list goes on forever. More ways to waste time.
g. Email. This is the best way to keep up on email in my pocket. I dump three different accounts onto my phone. The little mouseball makes it easy to scroll through the messages.
GCI has a special Blackberry plan ($30-$50/mo.) in addition to your wireless plan. Check it out.
