I visited Cooper Landing last week,  the headwaters of the Kenai River. where my son is leading wilderness tours on the Kenai River. Looming over the headwaters is the glorious Kenai Princess Lodge.lodgeatkenai_40345c74_g2 I’ve stayed here several times–and I love it. Each of the bungalow-style rooms has vaulted ceilings made of naturally finished wood, cozy sitting areas with wood-burning stoves and private porches that look out on the river valley. You can see Kenai Lake from some of them. I remember watching the moon rise one evening. NO–I did not howl at the moon–but I thought about it. (more…)

Let’s take a close look at a couple of Princess Lodges’ resorts in Alaska:

a. Kenai Princess. Perched on a promontory overlooking the headwaters of the Kenai River in Cooper Landing, the Kenai Princess is an ideal venue for the fishing enthusiast or wildlife watcher. Hire a guide and float the Kenai River–searching for a monster Rainbow trout or a fighting Red Salmon. Watch for moose near the river–or even a bear nearby at the Russian River. In nearby Seward, go for a wildlife cruise in Kenai Fjords National Park. Right now, get three nights for the price of two. Or, take advantage of special $99 mid-week rates in May.

b. Denali Princess. Situated at the entrance to Denali National Park, this is a great spot to launch a tour deep into the park. Choose from a Natural History Tour, a longer Wilderness Tour (6-8 hours), or a special bus tour that goes the entire 95-mile length of the park road–all the way back to Kantishna. Watch for bear, caribou, moose and other wildlife. Also, go rafting on the Nenana River, check out an Iditarod Musher’s kennel–or opt for a helicopter flightseeing trip. The Denali Princess also offers three nights for the price of two. (more…)
