Back to school: Get any texting phone FREE, plus free unlimited nationwide texting for three months. You have to sign up for a tw0-year contract with a texting package to qualify–but this is a great deal.
Fan of the smart phone (my phone is m-u-c-h smarter than me). Choose from several travel essentials like Blackberry phones–and the phone is FREE, as long as you get a two-year contract, plus a smartphone package (typically about $30 per month on top of your plan cost).
Other GCI travel essentials on my radar:
a. XTREME Mobility. Cannot say enough about this handy device: it’s essentially a 3G cell phone that slips into your USB slot. That way, you can grab the fast signal right out of the air–without depending on intermittent hot spots when you’re traveling!
b. MI-FI. This is great technology. It essentially makes your laptop into a wi-fi router. You can enable up to five devices–and connect within 32 feet of your Mi-Fi. It’s fast, secure–and it’s available for just $20 per month. The device itself is $100, with a two-year contract.

Hanging with my tech-guru friends in Ketchikan, I finally figured out the whole fascination with “apps” on mobile phones. Further–I’m learning that my Android phone is much smarter than I gave it credit for. Surprise!

In addition to email and voicemail on the smartphone, there’s also “Google Talk” which is essentially a “chat” function–similar to Blackberry Messenger. It’s handy (as any teenager will tell you) when you cannot handle “voice traffic”. Say–in class!

Of course, the Android accommodates all the Twitter and Facebook functions, so you can update your status on the run (In the car…At McDonald’s….At Blockbuster….crucial stuff!).

Two of my favorite apps:

Qik: Streaming video autoposts to Twitter, YouTube and Facebook. Right from your smartphone.

Foursquare: You can keep up with your friends’ whereabouts. Check in at the gym, at work, at the coffee shop, at the airport. Again–critical stuff! HA!

Another Google app, Google Maps, has an easy interface with the Android. That, of course, is party because the Android is a “Google phone”.

Pick up a new Android-enabled HTC Hero for $100 with a two-year commitment. Go to the GCI website or visit one of the stores throughout Alaska.

Okay–I admit it: my phone is smarter than me. I have one of GCI‘s HTC Hero phones. I’ve had it for awhile–and it’s still smarter than me. Email. Alarm clock. Video player. My kids know how to set up custom ring tones. There’s a built-in GPS for maps. How’d they do that? I know–it’s a Google thang.
GCI is your smart phone headquarters. Whether you’re a Crackberry lover or an Android person (that’s me), you can upgrade right now at GCI. There are several Blackberry models available FREE with your two-year contract, including the 8330 (my wife has that one). The new “Storm” costs $100–but it’s pretty fancy.
Remember, the whole family can play with GCI‘s nationwide unlimited plans. The first phone is $70/month. If you have a smart phone, you’ll end up with another $30 monthly charge. But you can add up to four additional lines on the unlimited plans. Check with GCI for complete details. There are other plans available, but I like the Nationwide Unlimited plan.
One more GCI accessory that I love: the Xtreme Mobility wireless internet card. You get unlimited use in Alaska–and it saves me when I cannot find a “free” wireless spot when I’m traveling (or even around town).
The monthly cost is $20 (if you have GCI at home). But it’s worth it!

Now’s your chance to pre-order the HTC Desire or Motorola Milestone Android handsets from GCI. These are next-gen  Android:  Android 2.1 os, 3.7″ touch-screens, and linked to Google Marketplace’s apps store. These phones are free from GCI, with a new 2-year contract, plus qualifying data plan.

Get a free Blackberry phone at GCI. The best things in life are free–and that’s certainly the case with GCI right now (while supplies last). Pick up a Blackberry smart phone. Choose from several–you do have to sign a two year contract. However, you do not need a “data plan” if you don’t want one.

That said, why would you get a smart phone without the “data plan” functionality? Uh–I dunno.

Regardless, stop by and get a Blackberry today–free. Oh–you do need to choose some sort of phone plan–and that’s a monthly charge. I opt for the unlimited plan. The nationwide unlimited plan is $70 per month (OKOK–”$69.99″). Add unlimited texting for $6 per month. And YES, I recommend the data plan for an additional $30/mo.
