Are you Smart? Do you have a Smart Phone?

Okay–I admit it: my phone is smarter than me. I have one of GCI‘s HTC Hero phones. I’ve had it for awhile–and it’s still smarter than me. Email. Alarm clock. Video player. My kids know how to set up custom ring tones. There’s a built-in GPS for maps. How’d they do that? I know–it’s a Google thang.
GCI is your smart phone headquarters. Whether you’re a Crackberry lover or an Android person (that’s me), you can upgrade right now at GCI. There are several Blackberry models available FREE with your two-year contract, including the 8330 (my wife has that one). The new “Storm” costs $100–but it’s pretty fancy.
Remember, the whole family can play with GCI‘s nationwide unlimited plans. The first phone is $70/month. If you have a smart phone, you’ll end up with another $30 monthly charge. But you can add up to four additional lines on the unlimited plans. Check with GCI for complete details. There are other plans available, but I like the Nationwide Unlimited plan.
One more GCI accessory that I love: the Xtreme Mobility wireless internet card. You get unlimited use in Alaska–and it saves me when I cannot find a “free” wireless spot when I’m traveling (or even around town).
The monthly cost is $20 (if you have GCI at home). But it’s worth it!

GCI is offering a free “Android” phone like my HTC Hero when you sign up for a two-year unlimited plan and smartphone package.
To get the deal, visit one of GCI‘s stores in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Homer, Juneau, Kenai, Kodiak, the Mat-Su valley, Seward or Sitka. This GREAT deal is not yet on the GCI website. So stop into the retail store to sign up!
Remember–the unlimited plans also allow up to four partner lines. That means the whole family can jump on the “unlimited” train.

Okay. That got my attention. GCI is offering a free “Android” phone like my HTC Hero when you sign up for a two-year unlimited plan and smartphone package. Heck, that’s easy, ’cause you should have both of those plans anyway. Unlimited is a great way to go–and why have a smart phone if you don’t have the data package? Huh?

I <heart> my HTC “Hero” Android phone. Camera. Phone. Music player. Call.  Email. IM. Twitter. Facebook. Oh yeah….it’s all there. I could say “get Appy” and all that. But I really don’t know how to use half of the “apps” on my phone as it is. Sheesh.

It’s insane–but the kids now text-message me from their bedrooms while we’re sitting upstairs in the kitchen.  Smartphone, indeed. Rather than text them a nice message to take out the garbage, it’s still easier for me to walk into the other room and stomp on the ceiling. Cathartic, really.

Android=glue + ear

It’s official–my new Android phone (HTC Hero) from GCI is glued to my ear.
Well, not really. Especially here in Seattle. The Dream Police are out in force to make sure you post no bills–nor do you talk on your cell phone while weaving through the intersection of Interstate 5 and Interstate 90. All 12 lanes. IMAGINE! So, yes, I have the little hands-free earbuds–and I keep both hands on the wheel as I inch forward through traffic.
But the Google Maps function on the phone makes it easy to see what little real progress I’m making on the road. Amazing!
When I finally get to my destination, I use the new “Foursquare” application to let my friends know where I am. It’s a fun program–although it’s a little creepy if you’re a privacy nut. I am–but I still think it’s kind of fun. I’m  posting my Foursquare feed to Twitter and Facebook feed from my HTC phone. My friend Gary would say that falls under the “insufferable vanity of Twitter”. I suppose–but it’s still fun to fiddle with!

I’m discovering new features on the phone all the time. There’s a stopwatch. There’s a YouTube viewer which works very well with the 3.2-inch screen. There are apps for Facebook and Twitter–even a “voice search” function.
Honestly, I’m just getting used to the entire “app” process. There are jillions of free applications, plus some, like the Police Scanner, that you pay extra for.
Most of the applications still require two hands to use–which means I have to pull over to yet another espresso stand to type away between freeway exits. No shortage of either of these here in Seattle.
Another great feature of the GCI phone for me: unlimited nationwide calling and texting. I hate roaming fees. Now, for $99.99 per month, I can call/text all I want between Alaska, the Lower 49 and Canada. Oh–calls from Canada still are high: 45 cents per minute. The phone itself is $99.99 with a 2-year contact including a 3G smartphone package.

GCI: Invasion of the Droids

Our friends at GCI advise that the Androids have, indeed, invaded Alaska! GCI’s new phone the HTC Hero, features the Google Android operating system, which means it synchs nicely with all those Googley apps, including Gmail, Youtube, Google Voice and bunches of other applications.

Back a-w-a-y from the hotel phone. The nationwide unlimited plan with the HTC Hero is $99.99/mo., with a 2-year contract. No need to incur fat fees for dialing from your room! 

I’m still getting used to the 3.2-inch touch screen. I can flip the screen sideways to type on my QWERTY keyboard sideways. Thankfully, the numbers on the dialing screen are nice and big.

The new Hero is made for the social networker in all of us–it’s easy to flip back and forth between Twitter, Facebook and email.

MAPS. MAPS. MAPS. This is a big help when you’re on the road! The Hero works quite nicely with Google Maps.
