Yoga is good–and it’s good for you! Don’t take my word for it, tho’, Stop in and visit my friends Kim and Svia at Laughing Lotus here in Anchorage.

Laughing Lotus, in addition to a full schedule of regular classes, hosts  a series of workshops. Hey, people. Branch out in your Yoga-ness. Try something new. I did! HA!

a. Intro to Kashmiri Yoga, with Tanya Gonnason. 1/10/10. 6-8pm  $25. Work with the tactile sense, eliminate resistances in the spinal column, work with postures (asanas) to de-condition the body of poor alignment.
b. African Drum Workshop, with Jesse Wright and Johnnie Wright. Each Tue.,1/12-2/9/10, 8–9:15pm $90. Lift your spirits: learn traditional African drumming.  Two great drummers! No experience necessary.  Bring your drum.  If you don’t have one, let us know when you call to register.
c. African Fuzion Dance Workshop. Misha Morgan and Johnnie Wright.
1/14-2/11/10, 8-9:15pm $90. An African Dance Celebration full of learning, LIVE music and heart-pumping fun.  Here, step-by-step, we will explore dances rooted in the rich fabric of African culture.

When you visit the studio, buy a square in the pool to guess the time/date/gender of Svia’s baby-to-be. In this picture, she bares all in her quest to raise money for the charity (I forget the name). Something to do with kids–I remember that part.

Don’t you love being scrunched up in a  tiny middle seat for hours while traveling on a small plane? How about the long line at security? Don’t forget long delays and tight connections. Sometimes the deck is stacked against you. How do you cope?

Sometimes only a double martini will do the trick–I’ll agree with you there. But I’ve found a regular Yoga regimen helps me navigate the nips and tucks of air travel.

My friends at Laughing Lotus here in Anchorage have a variety of regular classes throughout the week (see below for SPECIAL Solstice workshop). My favorite? Bikram Yoga. That’s where they turn up the heat and you get a real workout! But there are several other styles: Ashtanga, Forrest (heck, I don’t really know the difference), etc.

Here’s what I do know: after practice, I feel better–ready to tackle Seattle traffic or LAX or an unscheduled border crossing. (more…)

Tell the truth. I know you get tied up in knots when you’re flying. Who doesn’t? Take advantage of Laughing Lotus in Anchorage. Owners Kim and Svia have a host of yoga classes available for everyone: Moms-to-be, Moms-with-kids, beginners like me and advanced-level workshops.

Lately, my favorite is the Bikram Yoga. That’s the HOT yoga that was featured a couple of months ago in the Anchorage Daily News. Actually, I thought the story, written by Julia O’Malley, was pretty good. I also liked the slide show by Erik Hill. Check it out.

I have a FREE PASS to a yoga class. To win, just drop me an email  (zoom@gci.net)with the name of the instructor featured in the Anchorage Daily News story. From the correct entries, I’ll pick a winner.

Actually, don’t wait to see if you win. Head on over to Laughing Lotus in Anchorage before you travel. Or after. Or both. They have a number of options, including one-time drop in rates, a punch card or “unlimited classes” for a month.

Namaste!
