Memorial Day Weekend: it’s the official start of summer! Above, we did a little exploring by ski plane around Mt. McKinley!
EXTRA: Live radio broadcast next Tuesday from the Mt. McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge. Tune in: KUDO 1080AM in Anchorage on Tue., May 18, 2-3pm. Live streaming online: www.kudo1080.com . Co-hosts Mindy O’Neall and Scott McMurren interview Princess general manager Steve Zadra on the mountain, the lodge, the deals and the adventures!
A. Mt. McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge. Memorial Day weekend rates: just $69 per night all weekend long (Fri/Sat/Sun/Mon). Just up the road from Talkeetna, this beautiful lodge actually is the closes lodge to Mt. McKinley. On the “mother of all decks”, the Great One (Denali) fills up the entire northwestern horizon. Plus, you’ll earn 1,000 Alaska Airlines miles! Optional activities include Denali flightseeing, jetboat tours of the Talkeetna, Susitna and Chulitna Rivers, float trips, fishing–and more.
B. Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge. Spend Memorial Day weekend for just $99 per night (Fri/Sat/Sun/Mon). This is a great deal! Located at the entrance to Denali National Park, the Denali Princess is your “base camp” for exploring the park. Other dates as low as $99 in May!
C. Kenai Princess. Stay Saturday and Sunday (May 29, 30, 2010) nights for $129 per night! The setting of the Kenai Princess is incredible: right above the Kenai River with views of Kenai Lake.  A perfect stop on your way to Seward, Homer, Soldotna–or any other destination on the Kenai Peninsula. Enjoy rates on other select dates from $99 in May.
Visit the Princess Lodges web page to see more great lodge deals in Fairbanks and Copper River all summer long. Check the 2-for-1 rail deals, too. Plan an adventure this summer. Stay with a Princess!

Okay, it’s snowing a little bit! So Alyeska Resort is getting ready for the white stuff. There are a couple of great ski-n-stay packages. One for weekdays and one for weekends. Weekdays, between Dec. 1-17, you can stay for $109 per person, double. That includes overnight accommodations, a full-day lift ticket for each adult and breakfast. Add $20 per person for weekend stays–and every day 12/20-12/30/2009.

Below, I snapped this shot leaning out the window of a small plane (Ya–the window was open!!). That’s the roundhouse in the foreground–and the hotel at the bottom of the hill.

Actually it’s called “Alaska’s Marine Highway”. And it really is a road between many of our far-flung communities.

My friend Marion Owen at Galley Gourmet in Kodiak took this picture of the m/v Tustumena sailing by her home last April.galleyg-tustumena-deck

Here’s a round-up of several specials now available on Alaska’s Marine Highway:

a. Driver goes free. Yep. Unlike the cruise ships which sail up from Seattle, the ferry can actually take your car or RV. And the driver goes free when you sail on a round-trip itinerary. (more…)

Our entire family loves sailing on the ferry–and we’ve enjoyed stopping at communities like Cordova, Sitka, Wrangell and Kodiak!
