Angling for an Alaska adventure? Plan a trip to the heart of the nation’s largest national park: Wrangell-St. Elias.

Stay at the Kennicott Glacier Lodge, on “Main Street” in Kennicott (building with the white roof in lower right-hand corner, above). They’ve got a great “bed and breakfast” package that includes accommodations in the main lodge. It’s a shared bath/shower down the hall–but we actually prefer the main lodge because of the comfy lounge, warm fireplace and cozy atmosphere. The cost is $79 per person per night–and it includes a delicious breakfast. You can order a bag lunch to take with you on your adventures. Toss it in the backpack and off you go!

Climbing with St. Elias Alpine Guides

Explore the old mill building–or strike out on hikes around the area, including the Bonanza Mine high above town. It’s a tough hike–but the payoff is fantastic–a Million-Dollar View!

Speaking of Million-Dollar Views, take a flightseeing tour with Wrangell Mountain Air. You can choose from an extensive air tour–or pick a place in the park to go hiking–and Wrangell Mountain Air can pick you up after a few hours in the park!

It’s a great way to get a bird’s-eye-view of the Kennicott area, as well as some up-close views of awesome glaciers which surround it!

And while you’re at Kennicott, set aside some time to walk out on the glacier! Choose from several adventures, including a half-day glacier hike. Your guide will provide crampons and offer tips for walking on the glaciers themselves. In fact–you can try some ice climbing! Don’t laugh–it’s FUN!

Make plans now to visit Kennicott, in the heart of Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. Call (907)258-2350.

Angling for an Alaska adventure? Plan a trip to the heart of the nation’s largest national park: Wrangell-St. Elias.

The ghost town of Kennicott is the site of what was the world’s largest copper mine. It operated in the first third of the 20th century and included an extensive supply chain which stretched down the Copper River valley to Cordova and south to smelters in Washington State.

Today, the historic remnants of the mining district are in sharp contrast to the natural splendor of the area.

Stay at the Kennicott Glacier Lodge, on “Main Street” in Kennicott. You’ll take your meals family-style in a structure that’s built where the old barracks for mining company VIPs once stood. Explore the old mill building–or strike out on hikes around the area, including the Bonanza Mine high above town. It’s a tough hike–but the payoff is fantastic–a Million-Dollar View!

Speaking of Million-Dollar Views, you should fly into McCarthy on Wrangell Mountain Air from Chitina.

I’m just curious. Are you headed to Seward for the big Mt. Marathon race? How about Seldovia, across the bay from Homer? I hear they have a great  parade? Below, our friends Tammy and Alicia were having a snowball fight atop Chilkoot Pass…they celebrated both Independence Day and Canada Day!!

snoball

One of my favorite destinations is Dawson City–up in the Yukon. They combine their Canada Day celebration on July 1 with an Independence Day party for the visiting Yankees (we’re everywhere, y’know!).

Other friends of mine always head back to McCarthy, in the heart of Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. Oh–they’re tough, too. They camp out. Here, we camped at the foot of a glacier deep in the park. FUN! SEAGBig shout-out to St. Elias Alpine Guides and to Wrangell Mountain Air.

Wherever you go–take some pictures and send me some of the best ones, along with a description of what’s going on.

My wish for July 4 travel? Heck, that’s easy. I wanted a slot to go check out the USS John C. Stennis. My friend Randy got to go spend the night on the ship–he promised to send me some snaps–I’ll post ‘em when I get ‘em.

Don’t be bashful–share some of your great travel experiences with the class. The world wants to know what a great time we’re having in Alaska! Be a real evangelist. It’s fun!!

I was on the phone with Rich Kirkwood at Kennicott Glacier Lodge. He’s teamed up with Wrangell Mountain Air and St. Elias Alpine Guides to offer an all-inclusive deal to Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. This is an especially good deal if it’s your first time back in the park.

Let me ask you a question: have you been back to Kennicott yet? OMG! What are you waiting for?? Honestly, this is the nation’s largest national park–there’s so much to see and do. VIDEO VIDEO! If you haven’t watched the movies we made out there, check ‘em out here. And here.
